Every phone imports vCard, none import your spreadsheet

Contacts live in spreadsheets and phones read vCard files. The gap between them is why importing a list of a few hundred people is so annoying: Google Contacts wants its own column names, Outlook wants a different set, and iOS will only accept a .vcf. Converting to vCard once produces a file every one of them accepts, because vCard is the interchange format they all agree on.

The details that break an import

vCard has rules that are easy to violate by hand. Commas and semicolons inside a value must be escaped with a backslash, because both are structural separators in the format. Lines longer than seventy five octets must be folded onto a continuation line beginning with a space. The name field has five semicolon separated components in a fixed order, and putting a full name in the wrong slot produces contacts filed under the wrong letter. Version 3.0 and 4.0 differ in how types are written, and some older phones only read 3.0.

Mapping is the part only you can do

The converter reads your header row and guesses which column is a name, an email, a phone number or an organisation, but the guess is only a starting point. Reviewing the mapping takes a few seconds and prevents the classic outcome where every contact imports with a phone number in the notes field and no name at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose vCard 3.0 or 4.0?

3.0 has the widest compatibility and is what most phones and Outlook versions expect. 4.0 is the current standard with better handling of types and international fields, and modern iOS and Android read it. When in doubt use 3.0.

Why are commas in my addresses escaped?

Because a comma is a value separator inside a vCard property. Without the backslash escape, a street address containing a comma splits into separate values and the import lands the second half in the wrong field.

How are multiple phone numbers handled?

Map each phone column to its own type, such as cell, work or home. Each becomes a separate TEL line with the right type parameter, so the phone shows them as distinct numbers rather than concatenating them.

Does it produce one file or many?

One .vcf file containing every contact, which is what all the major address books expect for a bulk import. Some older systems want one file per contact; you can split the output on the BEGIN:VCARD boundaries if you hit that.

Is my contact list uploaded?

No. Parsing and generation happen in your browser and the download is created locally. A contact list is personal data for everyone on it, so it should not be pasted into a remote converter.
