Where the text comes from

Lorem Ipsum is a scrambled extract from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC. Typesetters have used it since at least the 1500s. The familiar opening, Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, is a truncation of dolorem ipsum, meaning "pain itself". It is not meaningful Latin, which is precisely the point.

Why nonsense text is the right choice

Placeholder text exists so that people reviewing a layout look at the layout. Real copy pulls attention to the words: a stakeholder reads the sentence, disagrees with the claim, and the conversation about spacing and hierarchy never happens. Lorem Ipsum has roughly the letter distribution and word-length variation of Latin-script prose, so it produces a realistic visual texture without being readable.

When to use something else

Lorem Ipsum is misleading in three situations. If your interface will hold real content of a known length, generate placeholder text of that length, because a design that works with 40 words of Latin may break with a 4-word product name or a 200-word description. If you are testing internationalisation, use text in the actual target scripts, since CJK characters, Arabic right-to-left rendering and German compound nouns all stress a layout differently. And never ship it: Lorem Ipsum reaching production is a routine and very visible embarrassment.

Test the extremes, not just the average

The genuine value of generated text is producing the cases real data will contain but a designer will not think to try: an empty string, a single character, a word longer than its container, and text several times longer than expected. Most layout bugs live at those extremes rather than in the middle.

Accessibility note

Placeholder text in a design file is harmless. Placeholder text left in an alt attribute, a heading or a page title is actively harmful, because assistive technology will read it out as though it were content. Sweep for it before launch alongside the visible copy.
