Calculate wind chill
Wind chill is the temperature it feels like on exposed skin when wind is factored in, because moving air carries heat away from the body faster than still air. This calculator uses the official formula adopted by the United States National Weather Service, which combines the air temperature in Fahrenheit and the wind speed in miles per hour. At twenty degrees Fahrenheit with a twenty mile per hour wind, it feels like about four degrees, sixteen degrees colder than the air temperature.
The formula applies at wind speeds of three miles per hour or more; below that, wind chill is simply the air temperature.
Why wind chill matters
Wind chill is an important safety measure in cold weather, because the faster heat loss it describes increases the risk of frostbite and hypothermia. Weather services issue wind chill warnings when the feels-like temperature drops to dangerous levels. Knowing the wind chill helps you dress appropriately and judge how long it is safe to be outside.
The result is shown in both Fahrenheit and Celsius. Wind chill only describes heat loss from exposed skin, so it is most relevant for how cold you will feel outdoors. All calculation happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is wind chill?
It is the feels-like temperature on exposed skin when wind is included, since moving air removes body heat faster than still air.
What formula does it use?
The official National Weather Service wind chill formula, combining air temperature in Fahrenheit and wind speed in miles per hour.
Does wind chill apply at low wind speeds?
The formula applies at three miles per hour and above. Below that, there is little wind effect, so the chill equals the air temperature.
Why does wind chill matter?
Faster heat loss raises the risk of frostbite and hypothermia, so wind chill guides how to dress and how long it is safe outdoors.
