Photographs carry more than the picture
EXIF records camera make and model, lens, exposure settings, the exact capture timestamp and, when location services were enabled, GPS coordinates accurate to a few metres. A photo posted publicly can therefore disclose a home address. Most social platforms strip EXIF on upload; email attachments, cloud file shares and direct downloads do not.
Documents carry authorship and history
Office files and PDFs record author name, organisation, creating software, revision count and total editing time. Tracked changes, comments and earlier revisions frequently survive into a distributed file. Redacting the visible text without clearing metadata leaves an entire channel open, and this has produced real disclosures in published documents.
Metadata is evidence
Timestamps and camera fingerprints are used routinely in journalism and litigation to establish when and by what device a file was created. Editing software leaves its own trace, so a modified image usually announces the fact. The absence of metadata is itself informative, since it indicates deliberate stripping.
Serial numbers and thumbnails
Some cameras embed a body serial number, which links every photograph from that device to the same owner. EXIF also stores an embedded thumbnail that is not always regenerated on edit, so a cropped image can carry a thumbnail showing the original uncropped frame.
Strip deliberately, and verify
Re-saving through most editors, converting format, or taking a screenshot removes metadata as a side effect. For anything sensitive the correct approach is explicit stripping followed by re-inspection of the output, because assuming a tool cleared it is how metadata survives into publication.
