Why gravel is sold by volume and weight
Gravel is spread to a depth over an area, so the volume needed is area times depth, but it is often sold and delivered by weight, in tons, and the two relate through the material’s density. Estimating both the cubic yards and the tons means you can order however the supplier sells it, without a conversion mistake. Getting the depth right matters, since it drives the quantity, and a proper base depth is what makes gravel stable, so under-ordering leaves a job that does not last.

Why give both cubic yards and tons?
Because gravel is sold by volume by some suppliers and by weight by others. Having both lets you order however the supplier prices it.
