Why scanned pages come out sideways

A document feeder captures pages in the orientation they were fed, and a landscape page fed into a portrait scanner is stored rotated. Viewers often let you rotate the display temporarily, but that setting lives in the viewer and is gone the moment someone else opens the file. Rotating and saving writes the orientation into the document itself, so it is correct for everyone.

Rotation is metadata, not re-rendering

A PDF page carries a rotation property of 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees. Changing it tells every viewer how to display the existing content rather than redrawing anything. Nothing is re-encoded, so there is no quality loss and no change in file size, and the operation is instant even on a large scanned document. Rotation is also fully reversible: applying the inverse restores the original exactly.

Rotations are cumulative

The property is absolute, but applying rotation twice adds up. Rotating a page already at 90 degrees by another 90 gives 180, not 90. When a document has pages at several different orientations, rotating everything by the same amount preserves the differences rather than levelling them. Fixing a mixed-orientation scan usually means correcting pages individually.

Rotation and printing

Printers generally respect the rotation property, but print dialogs also carry their own orientation and scaling settings that can conflict. If a page prints sideways despite looking correct on screen, check the print dialog before rotating the document again, since rotating twice to compensate produces a file that is wrong everywhere else.

Local processing

The rotation property is changed in your browser and the file is never uploaded, so correcting a sideways contract does not put a copy on someone else's server.
