Scale a recipe up or down

Cooking for a different number of people than a recipe was written for means adjusting every single ingredient, which is fiddly to do reliably by hand. This scaler adjusts all the ingredient quantities at once from the original number of servings to whatever target number you need, so a recipe for four becomes a correct recipe for six, or two, without the tedious arithmetic.

Why scaling by hand is error-prone

Properly scaling a recipe means multiplying every ingredient by exactly the same ratio, the target servings divided by the original servings, and doing that consistently across a long ingredient list full of fractions and mixed units is genuinely tedious and very easy to get wrong on just one item, which then quietly throws off the balance of the whole dish. The scaler applies the ratio to every quantity simultaneously, so the proportions all stay correct and a recipe for four scales cleanly to six or down to two. It handles all the arithmetic for you, so you can confidently cook the right amount without the lingering risk of a single mis-scaled ingredient spoiling the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does scaling a recipe work?

By multiplying every ingredient by the same ratio, the target servings divided by the original servings, so all the proportions stay correct.

Why is scaling by hand error-prone?

Because it means applying the ratio to a long list with fractions and mixed units, and getting just one wrong throws off the whole dish.

Can it scale down as well as up?

Yes. Whether you want more or fewer servings than the recipe, it applies the appropriate ratio to every ingredient.

Does everything scale linearly?

Most ingredients do, though cooking times and some strong seasonings may need judgement. The scaler handles the quantities; use sense for the rest.

Is my data uploaded?
