The eight glasses rule is a myth

There is no scientific basis for eight 8-ounce glasses a day. The figure appears to trace back to a 1945 US recommendation that suggested about 2.5 litres daily and noted in the very next sentence that most of it comes from food. That qualifier was dropped and the number took on a life of its own. It is repeated so widely that it feels authoritative, and it has never been supported by evidence.

Food provides a substantial share

Roughly 20 percent of typical fluid intake comes from food. Fruit and vegetables are largely water: cucumber and lettuce are over 95 percent, watermelon and strawberries over 90. Soup, yoghurt and most cooked grains contribute meaningfully. Anyone eating a normal diet is already partway to their requirement before drinking anything.

Coffee and tea count

The belief that caffeinated drinks dehydrate you is wrong at ordinary intakes. Caffeine has a mild diuretic effect, but the fluid in the drink more than compensates, and habitual drinkers develop tolerance to the effect. Research consistently finds moderate coffee and tea contribute to hydration much like water. Alcohol genuinely is a net negative, which is a different matter.

What actually changes your needs

Body mass, because a larger body has more to supply. Physical activity, which can add a litre or more per hour of hard exercise through sweat. Heat and humidity. Altitude, which increases both respiratory water loss and urine output. Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Fever, vomiting and diarrhoea. A generic figure ignores all of it.

Thirst works

For healthy adults with normal kidney function, thirst is a reliable guide and urine colour is a decent check: pale straw is fine, dark yellow suggests drinking more, completely clear suggests more than needed. The main exceptions are older adults, whose thirst response is blunted, young children, and anyone exercising hard, where deliberate intake matters.

Overhydration is real

Drinking far more than needed can dilute blood sodium, a condition called hyponatraemia, which is dangerous and has killed endurance athletes and participants in water-drinking contests. More is not automatically better.
