Calculate the date of Easter

Easter is a movable feast, meaning its date changes every year, falling on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox. Because of this rule, working out the date by hand is difficult, so this calculator uses the computus, the astronomical algorithm the church uses to determine Easter in the Gregorian calendar. Enter a year and it returns Easter Sunday, along with Good Friday two days before and Easter Monday the day after.

The calculation is valid for the Gregorian calendar, from 1583 onward, and matches the official dates used in Western Christianity.

Why Easter moves

Unlike fixed-date holidays, Easter can fall anywhere from late March to late April, which ripples through to connected dates like Good Friday, Palm Sunday and the start of Lent. Knowing the date well in advance helps with planning holidays, school terms and events. The algorithm, developed over centuries and refined by the Gregorian reform, captures the lunar and solar rules precisely.

Eastern Orthodox churches often celebrate Easter on a different date because they base it on the older Julian calendar; this tool gives the Western date. All calculation happens locally in your browser.
