The number carries its own structure

Since 1981 every road vehicle sold in North America and most of the world carries a seventeen character Vehicle Identification Number with a fixed layout. The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, the next five describe the vehicle attributes, the ninth is a check digit, the tenth encodes the model year, the eleventh identifies the assembly plant and the last six are the serial number. Because the layout is standardised, a great deal can be read directly from the number without consulting any database.

Position nine catches transcription errors

The check digit is computed by assigning a numeric value to each letter, multiplying each of the seventeen positions by a fixed weight, summing and taking the remainder modulo eleven, with a remainder of ten written as the letter X. A VIN copied wrongly from a windscreen or a document almost always fails this check, which is why insurers and registries validate it before accepting a submission. The letters I, O and Q never appear in a VIN precisely because they are confusable with one and zero.

What the year character means

The tenth character cycles through a thirty year sequence, so the same letter is reused a generation later. The tool resolves it against both possible cycles and reports which is likely from the model year rules, since a purely offline decoder cannot know which without the manufacturer record.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some VINs fail the check digit?

Either the VIN was mistyped, or it is from a market that does not mandate the check digit. North American VINs must satisfy it; some vehicles built for other markets do not compute position nine the same way, so a failure there is not automatically a fake number.

Why are I, O and Q never used?

They are visually confusable with the digits 1 and 0, so the standard excludes them from every position. A VIN containing one of those letters has been misread, most often an O in place of a zero.

Can this tell me the make and model?

It reports the manufacturer region and country from the first characters and the plant code, but the full make and model mapping lives in a licensed manufacturer database rather than in the number itself. Nothing is looked up here, so no model name is claimed.

How is the model year decoded?

The tenth character maps to a year in a repeating thirty year cycle, so a letter can mean two different years a generation apart. Both candidates are shown, with the more likely one indicated based on the current date.

Is my VIN sent anywhere?

No. Every step runs in your browser. A VIN is personally linked information in many jurisdictions, so keeping it local is the appropriate default.
