Adding up hours is where payroll errors start
A week of clock times looks trivial to total and rarely is. Times cross noon, one shift runs past midnight, breaks are recorded in minutes while everything else is in hours, and the decimal conversion trips people up because eight hours and thirty minutes is 8.5 hours but eight hours and fifteen minutes is 8.25, not 8.15. Payroll systems want decimal hours, wall clocks give hours and minutes, and the conversion between them is the single most common source of small, repeated underpayments.
Overtime is not one rule
In the United States federal overtime is based on hours worked over forty in a workweek, but several states add a daily threshold, most commonly over eight hours in a day and sometimes a double time tier beyond twelve. The two rules can produce different answers for the same week: four ten hour days is forty hours with no weekly overtime, but eight hours of daily overtime in a state that applies it. This calculator shows both so you can see which rule your jurisdiction is applying.
Rounding practices
Many employers round clock times to the nearest quarter hour. That is permitted in the United States only when the rounding is neutral over time rather than consistently favouring the employer. The tool can apply quarter hour rounding so you can compare the rounded and exact totals and see whether the practice is costing hours across a week.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by sixty. Fifteen minutes is 0.25 hours, thirty is 0.5 and forty five is 0.75. Writing 8.30 for eight hours thirty minutes is the classic mistake and understates the time by eighteen minutes over a week of such entries.
How is a shift that crosses midnight handled?
If the end time is earlier than the start time it is treated as the following day, so a shift from 22:00 to 06:00 counts as eight hours rather than a negative number.
Which overtime rule applies to me?
Federal law in the United States uses over forty hours in a workweek. California, Alaska, Nevada and a few others add daily overtime over eight hours and double time over twelve. Outside the United States the rules differ entirely. Both weekly and daily figures are shown here; your jurisdiction decides which governs.
Are unpaid breaks deducted?
Yes. Enter the unpaid break in minutes for each day and it is subtracted from that day’s total. Short rest breaks are generally paid time in the United States while genuine meal periods are not, so enter only the unpaid portion.
Is quarter hour rounding legal?
In the United States it is permitted when applied neutrally so that it averages out, and unlawful when it systematically favours the employer. The calculator shows exact and rounded totals side by side so the difference is visible.
