Convert between digital storage units

Digital storage comes in a confusing array of units, and the decimal-versus-binary distinction trips up almost everyone at some point. This converter moves cleanly between bits, bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB and the binary KiB, MiB and GiB, so you can compare any two sizes on a correct and consistent basis without doing the awkward factor arithmetic yourself.

Why decimal and binary units differ

A kilobyte is 1000 bytes under the SI decimal convention, while a kibibyte is 1024 bytes under the binary convention, and this small gap compounds with every step up the scale, reaching roughly 10% by the time you get to the terabyte. Drive manufacturers use the decimal units, while operating systems very often report the binary ones, which is precisely why a new drive appears to show noticeably less capacity than the number printed on the box. Converting freely between all of these units, and between the decimal and binary systems, resolves that confusion completely and lets you compare sizes on the same footing rather than being quietly caught out by the mismatch.

A calculation, not advice

It runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you enter is uploaded and it works without an account, keeping your figures on your own machine and available on any device immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between KB and KiB?

A kilobyte (KB) is 1000 bytes; a kibibyte (KiB) is 1024 bytes. The gap between decimal and binary units grows with each step up the scale.

Why does my drive show less than advertised?

Because drive makers use decimal units while the operating system often reports binary, so the same bytes show as a smaller number.

What units does it cover?

Bits and bytes through KB, MB, GB and TB in decimal, and KiB, MiB and GiB in binary, converting between all of them.

Why is there a bit-versus-byte distinction?

A byte is eight bits, and storage is measured in bytes while some speeds are in bits, so the converter keeps them distinct.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.
