Calculate average order value

Average order value, or AOV, measures how much a customer spends on a typical order. It is calculated by dividing total revenue by the number of orders over the same period. A store with fifty thousand in revenue across eight hundred orders has an average order value of sixty-two dollars and fifty cents. AOV is one of the most watched ecommerce metrics because raising it increases revenue without needing more customers or traffic.

It is simple to compute yet reveals a lot about purchasing behaviour and the effectiveness of merchandising and promotions.

Why AOV matters

Increasing average order value is often the cheapest way to grow revenue, since it leverages customers you already have. Tactics such as product bundling, upselling, cross-selling, free-shipping thresholds and volume discounts all aim to lift AOV. Tracking it over time shows whether these efforts are working and how pricing changes affect behaviour.

AOV also interacts with other metrics: combined with conversion rate and traffic it determines total revenue, and combined with purchase frequency and margin it feeds customer lifetime value. All calculation happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the AOV formula?

Average order value equals total revenue divided by the number of orders over the same period.

Why is AOV important?

Raising AOV increases revenue from existing traffic and customers, making it one of the most cost-effective ways to grow a store.

How can I increase average order value?

Try bundling, upselling, cross-selling, free-shipping thresholds and volume discounts, then track AOV to see which tactics work.

Should I include refunds?

For an accurate figure, base revenue on net sales after refunds, and count completed orders only, so the AOV reflects real spending.

How does AOV relate to revenue?

Revenue equals traffic times conversion rate times average order value, so AOV is one of three levers that drive total sales.
