Availability is the smallest hurdle

Finding an unregistered domain is easy; finding a good one that is unregistered is the work. Before committing, check three things beyond availability: whether the name is trademarked in your class and territory, whether the matching handles are free on the platforms you care about, and whether the word means something unfortunate in a language your customers speak. Any of the three can force a rename after you have printed materials.

Say it out loud

The radio test is whether someone can hear the name and type it correctly without seeing it spelled. Names fail it through ambiguous spelling, doubled letters at word boundaries, or homophones. If you find yourself saying that's with a Z or no hyphen, the name will cost you traffic permanently through people arriving at the wrong address.

Exact-match domains stopped mattering

Putting your keyword in the domain was a genuine ranking factor and has not been a meaningful one since Google's 2012 update targeting low-quality exact-match domains. A keyword domain with weak content ranks worse than a brandable domain with strong content. Choose a name you can build a brand on rather than one that reads like a search query.

Extension choice

Dot com remains the default people type and assume, and if a competitor holds the dot com of your name you will lose traffic to them indefinitely. Country extensions signal local presence and can help in local search. Newer extensions work fine technically and vary in how much trust they carry with a general audience. There is no ranking penalty for any extension; the difference is entirely in user expectation.

Length and hyphens

Shorter is better for recall and for typing on a phone. Hyphens are the classic tell of a name whose unhyphenated form was taken, and they compound the radio-test problem because they have to be spoken. Numbers create the same ambiguity, since four and 4 are indistinguishable aloud.
