What the summary is for
It occupies the most valuable space on the page, the first thing read, and its job is to answer one question immediately: is this person plausibly right for this role? Three to four lines. A recruiter scanning a stack decides in seconds whether to keep reading, and a summary that could describe anyone wastes the only guaranteed attention your CV receives.
Specifics or nothing
"Results-driven professional with excellent communication skills and a passion for innovation" is the default failure. It contains no information: every candidate claims it, none can be distinguished by it, and it is unfalsifiable. Replace each adjective with a fact. Years in the field, the specific domain, the scale of what you handled, one concrete outcome with a number. "Payments engineer, eight years, scaled a settlement pipeline from 40,000 to 2 million daily transactions" tells a reader more in one line than a paragraph of adjectives.
Target it to the posting
A generic summary sent to forty employers underperforms a specific one sent to ten. Lead with whichever of your qualifications the posting emphasises most. If the role centres on migration work and you have done three migrations, that belongs in the first line, not the third bullet of your second job.
Summary or objective
An objective states what you want. A summary states what you offer. Employers are reading to find out what you bring, so use a summary in nearly all cases. The narrow exception is a genuine career change, where a short line explaining the pivot prevents the reader spending their attention working out why a teacher is applying for a data role.
Write it last
The summary is a distillation of the CV beneath it, so writing it first means guessing at what you are about to say. Complete the experience section, then read it back and extract the three things a stranger would find most compelling. Those three things are the summary.
