Calculate gross merchandise value
Gross merchandise value, or GMV, is the total value of goods sold through a marketplace or ecommerce platform over a period, before deducting fees, discounts or returns. This calculator computes it by multiplying the number of orders by the average order value, and also shows the platform's own revenue by applying a take rate, the percentage of GMV the platform keeps as commission. Ten thousand orders at forty-five dollars gives a GMV of four hundred fifty thousand, of which a fifteen percent take rate yields sixty-seven thousand five hundred in platform revenue.
GMV measures the scale of transactions flowing through a platform rather than the platform's own earnings.
Understanding GMV
GMV is a headline metric for marketplaces and ecommerce platforms because it shows the total economic activity they facilitate. Investors watch GMV growth as a sign of scale and momentum. However, GMV is not revenue: a platform only earns its take rate, so a large GMV with a low take rate can mean modest actual income. Confusing the two is a common mistake.
GMV is most useful alongside the take rate and net revenue, which together show both the scale and the economics of a platform. It is typically reported before returns and cancellations, so a net GMV figure can be more conservative. All calculation happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is gross merchandise value?
It is the total value of goods sold through a platform over a period, calculated here as the number of orders times the average order value.
Is GMV the same as revenue?
No. GMV is the total transaction value, while a marketplace\'s revenue is only its take rate of GMV, which can be much smaller.
What is a take rate?
It is the percentage of GMV a platform keeps as commission or fees. Multiplying GMV by the take rate gives the platform\'s revenue.
Why do marketplaces report GMV?
It shows the scale of activity they facilitate and is a sign of growth and market position, even though it is not the platform\'s own income.
Does GMV include returns?
GMV is usually reported before returns and cancellations. A net GMV figure subtracting them gives a more conservative measure.
