Calculate takt time
Takt time is the rate at which you must complete a product to meet customer demand, a central concept in lean manufacturing. It is calculated by dividing the available production time by the number of units customers demand in that time. With four hundred fifty minutes of available production time and demand for three hundred units, the takt time is one and a half minutes per unit, meaning a finished unit must come off the line every ninety seconds to keep pace with demand.
The word takt comes from the German for a beat or rhythm, and it sets the heartbeat of a production line.
Using takt time in lean
Takt time aligns production directly with customer demand, which is the goal of lean manufacturing. Producing faster than takt builds excess inventory that ties up cash, while producing slower than takt means failing to meet demand. By comparing actual cycle time against takt time, managers can see whether a process is keeping up and balance work across stations so each one operates at the required pace.
Available time should exclude breaks, meetings and planned downtime so it reflects genuine production time. Recalculate takt whenever demand or available time changes, so the line's pace stays matched to the market. All calculation happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is takt time?
It is the available production time divided by customer demand, setting the pace at which units must be completed to meet demand.
How is takt time different from cycle time?
Takt time is the required pace set by demand, while cycle time is how long a process actually takes. Cycle time should be at or below takt.
What time should I use as available time?
Use net available production time, excluding breaks, meetings and planned downtime, so it reflects genuine time for producing units.
What happens if I produce faster than takt?
You create excess inventory that ties up cash and space, which lean manufacturing aims to avoid, so matching takt is the goal.
When should I recalculate takt time?
Whenever customer demand or available production time changes, so the production pace stays aligned with the market.
