Generate a canonical tag
The canonical tag is a link element with rel equals canonical that tells search engines which URL is the preferred, authoritative version of a page. This generator produces the correct tag from the URL you provide, ready to paste into the head of your page. It is the standard way to resolve duplicate content, where the same or very similar content is reachable at multiple URLs, by pointing all variants at a single canonical address.
The canonical URL must be absolute, including the protocol and domain, so search engines interpret it unambiguously.
Preventing duplicate content
Duplicate content arises from URL parameters, session IDs, print versions, HTTP and HTTPS variants, and trailing-slash differences, among others. Without guidance, search engines may split ranking signals across the duplicates or index the wrong one. A canonical tag consolidates those signals onto your chosen URL, protecting your rankings and keeping the right page in the index.
Each page should have exactly one canonical tag, usually pointing to itself unless it is a known duplicate. Make sure the canonical URL is reachable and returns a success status. All generation happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a canonical tag?
It is a link element that tells search engines the preferred URL for a page, consolidating ranking signals and avoiding duplicate content.
Why must the URL be absolute?
An absolute URL with the protocol and domain removes ambiguity, so search engines know exactly which address is canonical.
Should a page canonical to itself?
Yes, usually. A self-referencing canonical is recommended for the primary version of a page to make the preferred URL explicit.
Where do I place the tag?
In the head section of the page\'s HTML, where search engines look for canonical and other metadata.
Can canonical tags fix all duplicates?
They handle most duplicate-content cases, but redirects are better when a URL has permanently moved rather than being a duplicate.
