Click-through rate falls faster than position
The relationship between rank and clicks is not linear. Published studies consistently find the first organic result taking roughly a quarter to a third of clicks, the second around half of that, and everything past the first page collecting a rounding error. This is why the difference between position 3 and position 1 is usually worth more traffic than the difference between position 15 and position 4, and why an SEO plan that spreads effort evenly across a keyword list generally underperforms one that concentrates on keywords already close to the top.
Every published curve is an average of wildly different cases
The same position gives very different click-through rates depending on the query. Branded searches concentrate clicks at the top far more sharply than generic ones. A results page carrying an answer box, a shopping carousel or a local pack pushes the first organic result down the screen and cuts its share substantially. Informational queries where the answer appears in the snippet lose clicks to no result at all. Treat any curve, including the ones here, as a starting estimate to be replaced with your own Search Console data as soon as you have enough of it.
Use your own data when you have it
Search Console reports impressions, clicks and average position per query for your own site, which gives a click-through rate curve specific to your pages, your audience and the actual results pages your keywords produce. That measured curve beats any published average, and the gap between them is frequently large enough to change which keywords are worth pursuing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate are published CTR curves?
They are averages across enormously varied queries, so any individual keyword can differ by a factor of two or more. Use them to compare scenarios and prioritise, not to forecast a specific number you will be held to.
Why do SERP features matter so much?
Because they occupy the screen above the organic results. An answer box, shopping carousel or local pack can push the first organic listing below the fold, and its click share falls accordingly even though its position number has not changed.
Is position 1 always worth chasing?
Not always. The move from 4 to 3 costs less and often delivers more incremental clicks than the move from 2 to 1, and a query dominated by an answer box may deliver few clicks at any position. Compare the estimated gain against the effort in each case.
Why do branded queries behave differently?
Because the searcher already knows which result they want, so clicks concentrate on the first result far more sharply than for a generic query where several results look equally plausible.
Where do I get a curve for my own site?
Search Console, using the queries report with impressions, clicks and average position. Grouping by rounded position and averaging gives a curve specific to your pages and audience, which is consistently more useful than a published average.
