Internal links distribute what external links bring in

External links bring authority to the pages they point at; internal links decide where it goes from there. A page with no internal links pointing at it receives nothing regardless of how strong the rest of the site is, and a page linked from every other page accumulates a large share whether or not it deserves one. Most sites distribute this accidentally, with navigation and footers deciding the outcome rather than any judgement about which pages matter.

What the iterative calculation shows

The original PageRank formulation models a reader who follows links at random and occasionally jumps to a random page instead. Running that to convergence over your own link graph gives each page a share of the total, and the shares reveal things a link count cannot: a page with three links from important pages can outrank one with thirty links from unimportant ones. This calculation uses the same iteration on the graph you supply, which makes it a model of your internal structure rather than of anything a search engine actually computes.

The findings that matter are structural

Orphaned pages receive nothing and are usually a template or a migration accident rather than a decision. Dead ends, which receive links but emit none, absorb equity and pass none on. Pages with a high share and low commercial value, typically a privacy policy sitting in every footer, are consuming equity better spent elsewhere. Each of these is visible in the model and invisible in a page-by-page review, which is the case for computing it at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as Google PageRank?

No. It is the original published iteration run over the link graph you supply. Search engines use far more elaborate and undisclosed systems. The value is in the relative comparison within your own site, not in any absolute number.

What is an orphaned page?

A page with no internal links pointing at it. It receives no equity from your site and is usually discoverable only through a sitemap. Orphans are nearly always accidents of a template or a migration rather than decisions.

What is a dead end page?

One that receives links but has none pointing out. It absorbs equity and passes none on, which wastes it. The classic case is a thank you page or a terms page with no navigation.

Should every page have equal equity?

No. Equity should concentrate on pages that earn money or rank for valuable queries. The common failure is the opposite: a privacy policy in every footer accumulating more than the product pages, because nobody decided otherwise.

How do I change the distribution?

By adding links from strong pages to the ones you want to raise, removing site-wide links to pages that do not need them, and making sure every important page is reachable in a few clicks from the homepage. Changing navigation affects every page at once, which makes it the most powerful lever and the easiest to get wrong.
