Most structured data produces nothing visible

Schema.org defines hundreds of types and only a small number produce a rich result in search. Marking a page as WebPage or Organization is valid, correct and changes nothing about how the page appears. Choosing the type that both describes the page honestly and is eligible for a rich result is the difference between structured data that pays for itself and structured data that is simply extra bytes.

Required properties are the usual failure

Each rich result has properties without which it will not be shown, and validators report them as errors while the page continues to work perfectly. A Recipe missing cook time, a Product missing price or availability, an Event missing a start date: each is a complete schema block producing no rich result at all. Getting the required set right matters more than adding every optional property, and the required set is short.

Some types no longer do anything

Rich result support changes. Several types that once produced a visible result no longer do, including how-to markup and FAQ markup for most sites, which was restricted to health and government sources. The markup remains valid and produces nothing, so pages carrying it are maintaining code with no return. It is worth knowing which types are in that position before writing more of them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does structured data improve rankings?

Not directly. It helps search engines understand the page and makes it eligible for rich results, which can improve click-through rate substantially. The gain is in presentation rather than position.

Why is my valid markup not showing a rich result?

Usually a missing required property, which validators report as an error while the page still works. Eligibility also requires the content to be visible on the page and the page to rank, and even then the rich result is not guaranteed.

Which types no longer produce a rich result?

How-to markup was withdrawn, and FAQ markup is now shown only for well-known health and government sources. Both remain valid and produce nothing for most sites, so pages carrying them are maintaining code with no return.

Should I use JSON-LD or microdata?

JSON-LD. It sits in a script tag separate from the markup, so it does not entangle with the template, and it is the format search engines recommend. Microdata still works and is far more painful to maintain.

Can I mark up content that is not visible?

No. Structured data must describe content the visitor can see. Marking up prices, reviews or availability that do not appear on the page is a policy violation and can result in a manual penalty removing rich results entirely.
