Duplicates are almost always a templating symptom
Identical titles across many URLs rarely happen by hand. They come from a template that omits the variable part, a pagination scheme where page two carries page one's title, faceted navigation generating a URL per filter combination with one shared title, or a content management system falling back to the site name when a field is empty. Finding the duplicates is easy; the useful step is recognising which of those patterns produced each group, because the fix is different in each case and applies to hundreds of pages at once.
Near duplicates matter as much as exact ones
Titles differing only by a city name, a page number or a product colour are functionally duplicates to a reader scanning results, even though no exact match check will find them. They also compete with each other for the same queries. Detecting near matches needs a similarity measure rather than an equality test, which is why this compares normalised token overlap rather than just comparing strings.
Length limits are approximate and still worth checking
Search results truncate titles at roughly 60 characters and descriptions at roughly 160, but both are actually measured in pixels, so a title in capitals or wide letters truncates sooner than a narrow one of the same length. Treat the character counts as a guide. An empty or missing description is a more definite problem than a long one, since search engines then generate a snippet from the page text, which may not say what you would have said.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do duplicate titles matter?
They give search engines nothing to distinguish the pages with, so the wrong one can rank or they can compete with each other. They also give a person scanning results no reason to choose one over another, which costs clicks regardless of ranking.
What counts as a near duplicate?
Titles that overlap heavily once normalised, differing only by a small variable part such as a page number or a location. They compete for the same queries and read identically in results, so they behave like duplicates even though no exact match test finds them.
Is a duplicate description as serious as a duplicate title?
Less so. Descriptions are not a ranking factor and are frequently rewritten by search engines anyway. They still affect click-through rate, so a description repeated across hundreds of pages is a wasted opportunity rather than a technical fault.
Should every page have a unique description?
On pages that matter for search, yes. On thousands of near identical pages, a good template with variable parts is more realistic than hand writing each one, and leaving it empty is a legitimate choice since search engines will generate a snippet from the page.
What lengths should I target?
Around 60 characters for a title and 160 for a description, remembering both are measured in pixels rather than characters, so a wide title truncates sooner. Put the important words first so they survive truncation whatever the exact limit turns out to be.
