Only a few tags still matter

The title element and the meta description are the two that affect how your page appears in search results. The meta keywords tag has been ignored by every major engine for well over a decade and can be removed. Author, revisit-after, distribution and rating tags do nothing for ranking. Adding more tags does not help; getting the few that matter right does.

Titles are measured in pixels

Google truncates titles at roughly 580 pixels, which is about 60 characters in the typical case but depends on the actual glyph widths, since a title full of capital Ms truncates far sooner than one full of lowercase i's. Put the distinguishing words first, because the end is what gets cut. A brand suffix is worth including only when the brand is recognised; for an unknown site it consumes pixels that could carry the page's actual subject.

Descriptions do not rank, they persuade

The meta description is not a ranking factor. It is advertising copy for the click. Google rewrites it for roughly two thirds of results, usually when a passage from the page matches the query better than your description does, so treat yours as a strong default rather than a guarantee. Around 150 to 160 characters fits before truncation. Write one per page; a duplicated description across many pages is a signal those pages are interchangeable.

Canonical

The canonical link tells search engines which URL is the preferred version of a page. It must be an absolute URL, because a relative canonical resolves against the current page and therefore always points at itself, which silently defeats the purpose. Every page should have exactly one canonical, and it should be self-referencing unless the page genuinely duplicates another.

Open Graph and Twitter Cards

Open Graph controls how a link renders when shared on most platforms. The image should be 1200 by 630 pixels; a square app icon produces a cropped, unconvincing card. Twitter reads Open Graph tags as a fallback, so a separate full set is unnecessary beyond twitter:card set to summary_large_image. Include og:title, og:description, og:url, og:image and og:type; the rest is optional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the meta keywords tag do anything?

No. Every major search engine stopped using it more than a decade ago because it was trivially abused. It can be removed with no effect, and leaving it in place mainly signals that the SEO advice being followed is out of date.

How long should a title be?

Around 60 characters, though the real limit is roughly 580 pixels, so wide capital letters truncate sooner. Lead with the distinguishing words. Include a brand suffix only if the brand is recognised enough to earn the space.

Why does Google show a different description than mine?

Google rewrites descriptions for a majority of results, usually when a passage on the page answers the query more directly. Your description is a strong default, not a guarantee. Writing one that matches likely queries improves the odds it is used.

Should canonical URLs be absolute?

Yes, always. A relative canonical resolves against the current URL, so every duplicate page canonicalises to itself and no consolidation happens. This is a common and silent failure.

What size should the Open Graph image be?

1200 by 630 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio. A square app icon gets cropped awkwardly. Keep the file under about a megabyte and use an absolute URL, since some crawlers will not resolve a relative one.
