Snippets are extracted, not written

A featured snippet is a passage lifted from a page that already ranks, chosen because it answers the question compactly and is formatted so it can be pulled out cleanly. You cannot request one. What you can do is make a passage easy to extract: put a direct answer immediately after the question, keep it within the length that fits the box, and use the structure the query implies. Pages that do this win snippets from positions well below the top, which is the main reason to bother.

Format follows the question type

A question asking what something is wants a paragraph of roughly 40 to 60 words. A question asking how to do something wants a numbered list. A question comparing options or listing specifications wants a table. Answering a how-to question in a paragraph is not wrong, and it is much less likely to be extracted, because the results page for that query is showing lists. Matching the format to the query type is the single highest leverage change available.

The answer must come first

A passage that builds up to its answer over three paragraphs cannot be extracted, because there is no self-contained span that answers the question. Stating the answer directly under the heading and then explaining serves both purposes: the extraction has something to take, and a reader gets the answer without scrolling. This inverts the structure most writing training teaches, and it is what works here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make a page win a featured snippet?

No. Snippets are extracted from pages that already rank, so ranking on the first page is a prerequisite. What you control is whether your passage is easy to extract once you are there.

How long should a snippet answer be?

Roughly 40 to 60 words for a paragraph snippet, which is what fits the box. Shorter frequently lacks enough substance to be chosen; longer gets truncated mid-sentence, which looks poor and reduces the chance of being picked.

Which format should I use?

The one the query implies: a paragraph for what and why questions, a numbered list for how-to questions, and a table for comparisons and specifications. Looking at what the results page currently shows settles it definitively.

Does winning a snippet increase traffic?

Not always. A snippet that fully answers the question can reduce clicks, since the searcher has what they came for. It helps most when the answer prompts a follow-up, and it also feeds voice results and AI summaries.

Where should the answer sit on the page?

Immediately after the heading that poses the question. A passage building to its answer over several paragraphs has no self-contained span to extract, and the reader has to scroll for something they asked for directly.
