What cannibalization actually is

Cannibalization happens when several pages on one site target the same query, so search engines have to choose between them and may pick a different one each time, split the ranking signals between them, or rank the weaker page. The symptom is a keyword whose ranking URL keeps changing, or a set of pages that each rank moderately where one page could rank well. It is a real problem and it is also over diagnosed, because two pages appearing for one keyword is not automatically harmful.

When two pages for one keyword is fine

A large site legitimately ranks several pages for a broad query, and occupying two positions can capture more clicks than occupying one. The problem arises specifically when the pages serve the same intent, so neither is clearly the better answer. A category page and a guide targeting the same term serve different intents and can coexist; two guides covering the same ground do not, and one of them is diluting the other.

Fixing it usually means consolidating

The strongest fix is merging the weaker page into the stronger and redirecting, which combines their links and content into one page that can rank properly. Where both pages must stay, differentiating them by intent and adjusting internal links to point the right one at the right query is the alternative. Canonical tags help when the pages are genuinely near duplicates, and they are not a fix for two distinct pages that simply overlap in topic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ranking two pages for one keyword always bad?

No. A broad query can legitimately return several pages from one site, and two positions can collect more clicks than one. The problem is specifically when both pages serve the same intent, so neither is clearly the better answer and the signals are split.

What does a fluctuating ranking URL indicate?

That search engines cannot decide which of your pages best answers the query, which is the clearest symptom of genuine cannibalization. A keyword whose ranking URL changes repeatedly is a stronger signal than two pages simply both appearing.

Should I use canonical tags to fix it?

Only when the pages are genuinely near duplicates. A canonical tells search engines the pages are the same, which is untrue for two distinct pages that merely overlap in topic, and it removes the non-canonical page from results entirely.

What data should I paste in?

A ranking export or Search Console query report with the keyword, the URL that ranked and the position, one row per line. Several months of data makes the fluctuating URL symptom visible, which a single snapshot cannot show.

Is merging always the right fix?

It is usually the strongest, since it combines the links and content of both pages. Where both must stay for other reasons, differentiating them by intent and pointing internal links at the right one is the alternative.
