Why the 60-character rule keeps failing

Title tags are truncated at approximately 580 pixels on desktop, not at a character count. In Google's rendering font, an i is around 4 pixels wide and a W is around 17. A title of 60 narrow characters fits easily; 55 wide ones do not. Every title that mysteriously got cut despite obeying the character guideline was cut because it was wide, not because it was long.

Capitals cost roughly forty percent more

ALL CAPS titles are dramatically wider than the same words in sentence case, which is one reason they truncate so often. Title Case sits between the two. If a title is close to the limit, changing capitalisation buys more room than deleting a word.

The brand suffix eats the budget

Appending a site name to every title is conventional and consumes 15 to 25 pixels per character of brand plus separator. On a long-tail page whose title needs every pixel, dropping the brand is the right call: nobody searching for a specific technical answer is selecting the result by site name. Keep it on the homepage and category pages where brand recognition helps.

Front-load the phrase that matters

Truncation removes the end, and users scan the beginning. Both point the same way: the primary phrase belongs at the front. A title reading "Everything You Need to Know About Subnet Masks" wastes its most valuable pixels on words nobody searched for.

Google rewrites titles too

Since 2021 Google has replaced title links when it judges the tag a poor match, often substituting an H1 or on-page text. Titles that are keyword-stuffed, generic, or wildly mismatched with page content are the most likely to be replaced. Writing an accurate, specific title is also the best defence against having it overwritten.

Mobile has different limits

Mobile results allow a similar pixel width but wrap to two lines more often, which changes what "truncated" means in practice. Checking against the tighter desktop limit is the safe default, since a title that fits desktop fits everywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

How wide can a title tag be?

Around 580 pixels on desktop. Character counts mislead because an i is about 4 pixels and a W about 17, so 60 narrow characters fits where 55 wide ones do not.

Does capitalisation affect truncation?

Substantially. ALL CAPS is roughly 40 percent wider than sentence case for the same words, so changing capitalisation buys more room than deleting a word.

Should I put my brand name in every title?

Not on long-tail pages, where it consumes pixels the actual phrase needs. Keep it on the homepage and category pages where brand recognition helps the click.

Why did Google change my title?

Since 2021 it replaces title links it judges a poor match, often with an H1 or on-page text. Keyword-stuffed, generic or mismatched titles are the most likely to be rewritten.

Are mobile limits different?

Mobile allows a similar width but wraps to two lines more often. Checking against the tighter desktop limit is safe, since anything that fits there fits everywhere.
