Text tables outlive every other format

A table drawn with characters renders identically in a terminal, a code comment, a commit message, a plain text email, a log file, a README and a chat message. There is no rendering engine to disagree with, no CSS to load and nothing to break when the content is copied elsewhere. This is why command line tools, database clients and diagnostic output have used them for decades and continue to.

Alignment is what makes a table readable

Numbers belong right aligned so the digits line up by place value and the magnitudes can be compared by eye. Text belongs left aligned so the eye can find the start of each entry. Getting this backwards makes a table technically correct and considerably harder to read. Columns are detected as numeric here when every value parses as a number, and aligned accordingly, with an override available per column.

Choosing a border style

ASCII borders using plus, minus and pipe work everywhere including in fonts and terminals with no Unicode support. Box drawing characters look substantially better and require a font that has them, which is almost every font in use today. Markdown tables render as real tables on GitHub and in most documentation systems while remaining readable as text. Minimal styles with no vertical rules suit wide tables where borders add noise rather than structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which border style should I use?

ASCII for maximum compatibility, including old terminals and monospaced contexts with limited font support. Unicode box drawing for anything modern, since it looks considerably cleaner. Markdown when the output goes into documentation that renders it as a real table.

Why are numbers right aligned?

So digits line up by place value and magnitudes can be compared at a glance. Left aligning numbers makes a column of figures much harder to scan, and right aligning text makes it hard to find where each entry starts.

Do tables need a fixed width font?

Yes. Character drawn tables depend on every character occupying the same width. In a proportional font the columns will not line up, which is why these tables belong in code blocks, terminals and plain text rather than in word processed documents.

How are wide characters handled?

East Asian characters and most emoji occupy two columns in a terminal, so they are counted as two when computing widths. Combining marks are counted as zero. Alignment still depends on the rendering environment agreeing with those assumptions.

Can I control alignment per column?

Yes. Columns are detected as numeric and right aligned automatically when every value parses as a number, and each column can be overridden to left, right or centre using the alignment string.
