Count vowels and consonants at a glance

The Vowel and Consonant Counter scans your text and reports how many vowels and consonants it contains, along with the total number of letters and digits. It treats A, E, I, O and U as vowels and every other alphabetic character as a consonant, counting both uppercase and lowercase. A per-vowel breakdown shows exactly how many of each vowel appear.

Percentages tell you what share of the letters are vowels versus consonants, which is useful for readability and linguistic analysis. Counts update live as you type, so you can see the effect of edits immediately.

Who needs a vowel counter

Students completing phonics and spelling exercises, teachers preparing language worksheets, poets analysing the sound balance of a line, and linguists studying vowel-to-consonant ratios all use this tool. Game designers and puzzle creators use letter counts to build word challenges.

The letter Y is treated as a consonant here, because it functions as a consonant more often than not in English. All counting happens locally in your browser, so your text remains private.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the letter Y counted as a vowel?

No. Y is counted as a consonant. In English it acts as a consonant more often than as a vowel, so we classify it that way for consistency.

Does capitalisation affect the count?

No. Uppercase and lowercase letters are counted the same, so A and a both count as one vowel.

Are numbers and symbols counted?

Digits are reported separately. Spaces, punctuation and symbols are not counted as letters, vowels or consonants.

What do the percentages mean?

They show what fraction of the total letters are vowels and what fraction are consonants, which helps gauge the sound balance of the text.

Does it update automatically?

Yes. The counts refresh as you type or paste, so there is no button to press.
