Count syllables for poetry and readability

Syllable counts matter when the form depends on them: a haiku’s five-seven-five, a limerick’s meter, a song lyric that has to scan. Counting by ear is easy to get wrong on longer lines. This tool counts the syllables in your text and breaks the count down per line, so you can check a poem’s structure line by line rather than tallying in your head.

How syllable counting works, and its limits

Syllables are estimated by finding groups of vowel sounds in each word and adjusting for common patterns like a silent trailing "e" and consecutive vowels that form one sound. This works well for the large majority of English words. It is an approximation, though: English spelling is irregular, and a handful of words will be off by one. For metrical work, treat the count as a strong guide rather than an absolute.

Per-line breakdown is the useful part

A single total tells you little about a poem; the per-line counts tell you everything. Seeing that line three came out at six when it should be five points you straight at the line to fix. The counting runs in your browser, so drafts of poems, lyrics or copy stay private while you shape them.
