A concordance shows usage, not just presence
Searching a document tells you a word appears forty times. A keyword in context concordance shows all forty occurrences aligned on the word itself, with the surrounding text either side, so the patterns become visible at a glance. It is the oldest tool in corpus linguistics, predating computers by centuries in the form of biblical concordances, and it remains the fastest way to answer questions about how a term is actually being used rather than whether it is used.
What the alignment reveals
Aligning every occurrence on the same column makes collocations obvious. If "security" is preceded by "information" thirty times out of forty, that is visible immediately in a way it is not in a list of search results. The same alignment shows inconsistent usage: a document that uses "user", "customer" and "client" for the same person shows it clearly when the three concordances are compared, and inconsistent terminology is one of the most common causes of confusing documentation.
Practical uses beyond linguistics
Checking terminology consistency before publication, finding every place a product name appears so it can be changed, auditing whether a legal term is used consistently across a contract, and checking that a technical term means the same thing throughout a specification are all concordance tasks. In each case the question is about the pattern of usage rather than about a single instance, and a list of line numbers does not answer it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does KWIC stand for?
Keyword in Context. It is a standard concordance format where every occurrence of the search term is aligned in a central column with surrounding context either side, so patterns of usage are visible by scanning down the column.
What is a collocation?
A word that appears near the search term more often than chance would predict. Aligning occurrences makes collocations visible immediately, and they tell you how a term is actually used rather than how it is defined.
How much context should I show?
Enough to see the grammatical pattern, which is usually five to ten words either side. Wider context helps for semantic questions and makes the alignment harder to scan.
Can I search for a phrase?
Yes. A multi word term is matched as a unit and aligned the same way. Regular expressions are also supported for matching variants, such as several forms of the same root.
Why does terminology consistency matter?
Because a reader who encounters "user", "customer" and "client" for the same person has to work out whether the distinction is meaningful. Comparing the concordances of the three terms shows whether they are used interchangeably, which is difficult to see any other way.
