Remove punctuation from any text
The Remove Punctuation tool deletes punctuation marks such as periods, commas, colons, semicolons, question marks, exclamation points, quotation marks, brackets, slashes and underscores. It keeps letters, numbers and spaces, so you are left with clean words. You can choose to preserve apostrophes so contractions like "don't" stay intact, keep hyphens so compound words such as "well-known" survive, and keep or flatten line breaks.
This is handy whenever punctuation gets in the way. Word-frequency analysis, text mining and machine-learning pre-processing all benefit from punctuation-free input, as do spelling lists and simple search indexes.
Flexible cleaning options
By default everything except letters, numbers, spaces and line breaks is removed, and double spaces are collapsed. Turning on the apostrophe and hyphen options lets you retain the marks that are genuinely part of words while still removing sentence punctuation.
The tool recognises both straight and curly apostrophes, so text copied from word processors is handled correctly. All processing happens in your browser, so your text never leaves your device.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does it keep contractions readable?
Only if you tick "Keep apostrophes". With that option on, words like "can't" and "it's" remain intact; otherwise the apostrophe is removed.
Are numbers removed too?
No. Numbers are kept. Only punctuation marks are removed, while letters, digits and spaces remain.
Can I keep hyphenated words together?
Yes. Tick "Keep hyphens" and compound words such as "state-of-the-art" stay joined by their hyphens.
Does it handle curly quotes?
Yes. Both straight and typographic (curly) quotation marks and apostrophes are recognised and removed unless you choose to keep apostrophes.
Will my paragraphs be preserved?
By default line breaks are kept. Untick "Keep line breaks" to collapse everything into a single block of text.
