Censor specific words in your text
The Text Censor Tool replaces words you choose with asterisks or any mask character, letting you redact profanity, names, confidential terms or spoilers from a block of text. You supply a list of words, separated by commas or spaces, and the tool finds and masks every occurrence in one pass. By default the mask matches the length of each censored word, so "secret" becomes six asterisks, preserving the shape of the sentence.
Options give you fine control. Whole-word matching ensures that censoring "ass" does not also mask "class" or "pass". Case-insensitive matching catches every capitalisation, and you can swap the asterisk for a hash, bullet or other symbol.
When censoring text helps
Content moderators clean user-submitted text before publishing. Teachers and presenters remove spoilers or sensitive terms from shared material. Writers redact names and private details when sharing a draft. Community managers enforce a word blocklist consistently across posts.
This tool performs simple word replacement and is not a substitute for human review when accuracy is critical, since it only masks the exact words you list. All processing happens locally in your browser, so the original text and your blocklist never leave your device.

How do I list the words to censor?
Type them in the words box separated by commas or spaces. Every listed word is masked wherever it appears in the text.
Can I keep the length of each word hidden too?
The default masks each word with the same number of symbols as its letters. Untick "Match word length" to replace every word with a fixed three-symbol mask instead.
Will it censor parts of other words?
Only if you turn off whole-word matching. By default a listed word is masked only when it stands alone, so it will not affect larger words that contain it.
Can I use a symbol other than an asterisk?
Yes. Enter any single character as the mask, such as a hash, bullet or dash, and it is used in place of the asterisk.
Is this secure redaction?
It is simple word masking for readability and moderation. For legally sensitive redaction, always review the output manually to ensure nothing was missed.
