Having text read aloud is useful for proofreading, for accessibility, for learning pronunciation, and for listening to an article while doing something else. This player uses your browser’s built-in Web Speech API to read whatever you paste, with no account and no upload, because the speech is generated on your own device.
Control the voice, speed, pitch and volume
A single robotic voice at one speed is not very usable. The player lets you choose from the voices your browser and operating system provide, and adjust the speaking rate, pitch and volume. Slowing the rate helps when you are checking each word; the range of voices covers different languages and accents depending on what your system has installed.
Why proofreading by ear works
Reading your own writing silently, your eye skips over errors it expects not to see. Hearing it read aloud surfaces the awkward sentence, the repeated word and the missing "the" that your eye glided past, because the ear does not skip. Because the synthesis is local, even a private draft can be read back without leaving your machine.
