Splitting on full stops does not work

The obvious approach breaks immediately. "Dr. Smith arrived at 3.30 p.m." contains four full stops and one sentence. Version numbers, decimal figures, ellipses, abbreviations such as e.g. and etc., initials in names, and file extensions all contain a period that does not end a sentence. Meanwhile plenty of sentences end with a question mark, an exclamation mark, or a closing quotation mark or bracket that comes after the terminal punctuation.

What actually decides a boundary

A reliable splitter uses several signals together: the punctuation itself, whether a closing quote or bracket follows it, whether the next character is whitespace, whether the following word begins with a capital, and whether the preceding token is a known abbreviation or a single initial. None of these is decisive alone. "He works at Google. Inc was founded later" and "He works at Google Inc. The founders met earlier" differ only in context that the rule cannot see.

Why splitting is needed

Sentence boundaries are the unit for readability analysis, translation memory alignment, subtitle segmentation, text to speech chunking, and feeding text into any model with a token limit. Diffing two versions of a document by sentence rather than by line produces a far more readable comparison, because a reflowed paragraph shows one changed sentence instead of every line after the change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why not just split on periods?

Because a period ends a sentence only some of the time. Abbreviations, decimals, version numbers, initials, ellipses and file extensions all contain periods, and a sentence can also end with a question mark or an exclamation mark followed by a closing quote.

Which abbreviations are handled?

Titles such as Dr, Mr, Prof and St, common Latin abbreviations including e.g., i.e. and etc., month and weekday abbreviations, business suffixes such as Inc and Ltd, and single capital letters used as initials. You can add your own to the list.

Is splitting ever perfectly accurate?

No. Some boundaries are genuinely ambiguous without understanding the meaning, since "Google Inc." followed by a capitalised word can be either one sentence or two. Rule based splitting handles the overwhelming majority correctly and will occasionally be wrong.

How are quotations handled?

A terminal punctuation mark followed by a closing quote or bracket is treated as ending the sentence after the closing mark, so the quotation stays intact. A quoted sentence inside a longer one is not split out, since its terminal punctuation sits inside the quotation.

What is this useful for?

Readability analysis, subtitle segmentation, translation alignment, text to speech chunking, and splitting long documents for models with token limits. Sentence level diffing also makes comparisons of reflowed text far more readable than line level diffing.
