Why randomness helps creative work
Brainstorming stalls because the mind returns to the same associations. A genuinely unrelated word forces a connection you would not have made, which is the mechanism behind lateral-thinking techniques such as random-word association. The value is precisely that the word is irrelevant: relevance is what your existing thinking already supplied.
Naming and availability
Random words are a common starting point for product and company names, but the word itself is rarely the answer. What matters is whether the domain is free, whether the trademark is clear in your class and territory, and whether the word carries an unfortunate meaning in a language your customers speak. Check all three before becoming attached to anything.
Games and teaching
Pictionary, charades, improvisation prompts, spelling practice and vocabulary drills all need words nobody at the table chose. Filtering by length or difficulty matters here: a word list suitable for a seven-year-old and one suitable for a crossword setter share almost nothing.
Test data
Random words make better test fixtures than repeated placeholder text because they vary in length, which is what exposes layout problems. Real bugs live at the extremes: the very short word that leaves a gap, the very long one that overflows its container. Uniform filler hides both.
Random is not the same as memorable
If you are generating words for a passphrase, the randomness has to come from the generator, not from you picking favourites from a list. Choosing the words you like reintroduces exactly the predictability the randomness was providing, and reduces the entropy far more than people expect.
