See the code points behind your characters

Every character is a number underneath, and sometimes you need that number: to escape a character in source code, to file a bug about a specific glyph, to understand why two look-alike characters behave differently. This tool converts text to Unicode code points in U+XXXX form, and also to decimal and to HTML entities, so you can express any character in whichever notation your task needs.

Three notations for three jobs

The U+XXXX form is how Unicode characters are named and discussed, and how you look them up in the standard. Decimal code points are what some programming contexts expect. HTML entities are what you paste into markup to render a character reliably regardless of the page encoding. Producing all three from the same input means you do not have to convert between them by hand.

A window into invisible and look-alike characters

Converting to code points is the surest way to see what a character really is. Two strings that look identical but behave differently often contain a look-alike from another script, and their code points reveal it instantly. An invisible zero-width character has a code point even though it has no appearance. The conversion runs in your browser, so nothing you paste is uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What notations does it produce?

Unicode code points in U+XXXX form, decimal code point values, and HTML entities, all from the same input text.

When would I use HTML entities?

When you paste a character into markup and want it to render reliably regardless of the page encoding; the entity form is encoding-independent.

Can it reveal look-alike characters?

Yes. Two characters that look identical but come from different scripts have different code points, which the conversion makes visible immediately.

Does it show invisible characters?

Yes. A zero-width or other invisible character still has a code point, so it appears in the output even though it has no visible form.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.
