The style guides genuinely disagree

There is no single correct title case. AP style capitalises every word of four letters or more, so it writes "Over the Rainbow" but "The Man From Nowhere" with a capital From. Chicago capitalises by part of speech instead, lower casing articles, coordinating conjunctions and prepositions of any length, which gives "The Man from Nowhere". APA follows Chicago but capitalises any word of four letters or more regardless of part of speech. A heading that looks wrong is frequently correct under a different guide.

The rules that every guide shares

All of them capitalise the first and last word of the title regardless of what it is, so a title ending in a preposition still capitalises it. All of them capitalise the word after a colon. All of them capitalise both parts of a hyphenated compound in most cases, though Chicago has exceptions for prefixes. Those shared rules are where automatic converters most often fail, because the naive approach of capitalising every word except a fixed list gets the first and last word wrong.

What no converter can do

Proper nouns, acronyms and deliberately lower cased brand names cannot be detected from the text alone. A converter will lower case "iPhone" to "IPhone" and capitalise "eBay" wrongly unless told otherwise. This tool preserves words that are already in mixed or all upper case, on the assumption that anything typed as iPhone or NASA was typed that way deliberately, which handles the common cases without guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which style should I use?

Whichever your publication requires. AP is common in journalism and marketing, Chicago in book publishing and long form, APA in academic psychology and social sciences, MLA in humanities. If nothing requires a specific one, pick any and apply it consistently.

Why do the guides disagree about prepositions?

AP capitalises words by length, so any preposition of four letters or more is capitalised. Chicago capitalises by part of speech, so prepositions stay lower case however long they are. Neither is wrong; they are answering the question differently.

Is the last word always capitalised?

Yes, under every major guide, even when it is a preposition or article that would otherwise be lower case. The same applies to the first word and to the word immediately after a colon.

How are hyphenated words handled?

Most guides capitalise both elements, so "State-of-the-Art" under AP. Chicago lower cases articles and prepositions within the compound, giving "State-of-the-Art" as well but "Twenty-first" rather than "Twenty-First" for spelled out numbers.

Why does it not fix my brand name?

Because proper nouns and deliberate lower casing cannot be inferred from text alone. Words already containing capitals, such as iPhone or NASA, are left untouched on the assumption they were typed deliberately.
