Padding is invisible to the writer
Almost every first draft contains words that do no work. Intensifiers such as "very", "really" and "quite" modify an adjective that was already adequate. Hedges such as "sort of", "I think" and "somewhat" weaken a claim the writer intended to make. Empty openers such as "it should be noted that" and "in order to" occupy space before the sentence begins. None of them is wrong individually, and collectively they can account for ten to fifteen percent of a draft.
Intensifiers make writing weaker, not stronger
"Very important" is less forceful than "critical", because the intensifier signals that the writer reached for a stronger word and did not find one. The same applies to "really", "extremely" and "highly". The fix is usually to replace the pair with a single stronger word rather than to delete the intensifier and leave the weak adjective behind, which is why the tool suggests replacements rather than only removals.
Some hedges are load bearing
Not every hedge is padding. In technical, legal and scientific writing, "generally", "typically" and "may" carry real meaning about the limits of a claim, and removing them turns an accurate qualified statement into an inaccurate absolute one. The distinction is whether the qualification is true. This tool flags them and does not remove them automatically, because only the writer knows which are doing work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are filler words always bad?
No. Hedges such as "generally" and "typically" carry real meaning in technical and legal writing, and removing them turns a qualified claim into a false absolute. Intensifiers and empty openers are almost always padding; hedges need judgement.
Why is "very important" weaker than "critical"?
Because the intensifier signals that the writer looked for a stronger word and settled for modifying a weaker one. Replacing the pair with a single precise word is stronger than either deleting the intensifier or keeping it.
How much can I expect to cut?
Ten to fifteen percent of a typical first draft, and more from writing that was dictated or written quickly. The reduction is almost entirely words that carried no meaning, so the text says the same thing in less space.
Does this work for speech transcripts?
Yes, and the reduction is usually larger, because spoken language contains far more hedging and repetition than written. Transcripts also carry "um", "you know" and "I mean", which are included in the list here.
Should I accept every suggestion?
No. Read each in context. Rhythm sometimes needs a word that adds nothing semantically, and a hedge that reflects genuine uncertainty should stay. The list is a prompt to look rather than an instruction to delete.
