Joining a list correctly has more rules than it looks

Two items take a conjunction with no comma. Three or more take commas between them and a conjunction before the last, with the comma before that conjunction being optional and contested. Items that themselves contain commas need semicolons as separators instead, or the sentence becomes ambiguous. An indefinite article before each item has to alternate between a and an according to the sound of the following word rather than its spelling, which is why it is "an hour" and "a university".

The Oxford comma changes meaning

The comma before the final conjunction is optional in most style guides and mandatory in a few. It matters because its absence occasionally creates a genuine ambiguity: "I'd like to thank my parents, Ayn Rand and God" reads differently from the version with the extra comma. Most of the time either is clear, and consistency within a document matters more than which convention you pick.

When a list should stay a list

Prose is better for two or three short items inside a paragraph. A bulleted list is better for anything the reader will scan, compare or count, for items of unequal length, and for anything with more than about five entries. Converting a long list to a sentence to save space produces a sentence nobody can parse, which is worse than the list it replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Oxford comma?

The comma before the final conjunction in a list of three or more. It is optional in most style guides and required in a few. It occasionally resolves a genuine ambiguity, and consistency within a document matters more than which convention you choose.

When should items be separated by semicolons?

When any item itself contains a comma. Without semicolons the reader cannot tell where one item ends and the next begins, which is the one case where the punctuation choice affects meaning rather than style.

How is a or an chosen?

By the sound of the following word rather than its spelling, which is why it is an hour and a university. Detection covers the common cases including silent h and words beginning with a vowel letter pronounced as a consonant, and unusual words may need checking.

Should long lists become sentences?

No. Prose suits two or three short items inside a paragraph. Anything a reader will scan, compare or count, and anything longer than about five items, is clearer as a bulleted list. A long list converted to a sentence is harder to read than the list was.

What conjunction should I use?

And for a list where all items apply, or for alternatives, and nor in a negative construction. Choosing the wrong one changes the meaning of the sentence rather than its style, so it is worth being deliberate.
